Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her childhood Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford then applied for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford was not able to finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
